Is your “Guru” a double-acting performer?
For many years there has been knowledge about the human brain functions andthe way the brain stores new information. As today we are living in an environment with information spreading in seconds over the world we should expect this kind of knowledge and being well known an even more important applied by the teachers of this world. But after having joined and listened to hundreds of seminars, webinars and other teachings I come to the conclusion that many of these teachers don’t really know about the way the human brain works and how information can be delivered to the audiences brain in an effective manner.
We have witnessed decades being announced as the decade of the brain (George W. Bush 1990-2000) but can we really notice a change in the way information is being taught in schools, universities, workplaces or the Internet?
As a matter of fact in most cases the way new information is presented to an audience is the same that we have been watching for centuries. It still seems like the teacher is giving all his responsibility for the learning success to each of the students. He even might have an attitude like ” “here’s the knowledge you need; eat bird or die” - this is a quote by one of my former biology teachers:-).
So obviously teachers with this kind of attitude don’t take responsibility that their students actually “get it”. Furthermore the teacher most likely will use his own preferred learning style by teaching his audience. Probably in many cases he is not even aware of the different learning styles humans have.
So have the words off famous learning instructors and brain scientists died away unheard?
In my understanding and in a “perfect world” each teacher would not only have excellent knowledge of the content he is teaching but also a mastery way to implement their material into the minds of his students. He would take all the responsibility for the learning success of all of the students no matter what preferred learning style they have, as long as all students are willing to give their best. In a long term teacher-student relation he would talk to each student in the way the student is most suited for. In case it’s only a short time teacher-student relation or they don’t get to know personally (distance learning, internet for example) he would offer the same information for different learning style approaches, so the student can pick his “piece of meat” out there.
As a conclusion I would like to emphasize the importance of choosing your teacher or “guru” not only on the basis of this proven knowledge or skills, but rather follow the following scheme:
1) does the teacher have the knowledge I need to reach my goals?
2) is he aware of the different learning styles?
3) if yes, does he use that knowledge in his teachings?
4) if no, does he use at least my preferred learning style?
5) if number 4) is answered with yes, you might as well take him
6) if number 4) is answered with no, you better find another teacher with similar skill level who suits your preferred learning style more.
If you follow this scheme and deliberately choose your teacher for future classes you would instantly feel more ease while learning and save a lot of money. Frustrations caused by skilled – but not using your preferred learning style methods – teachers will reduce dramatically.
