Why are there different color rubber stoppers for dental endofiles?

Rubber stoppers are used to prevent the files from perforating the apex of the tooth.

The rubber stoppers are different colors so the dentist can easily identify the thickness of the reamer. During the root canal the reamers widen the canals until the proper diameter is reached. Widening is done a little bit a time. Some time the reamers have colored tops others are on the stoppers.
